Chang Hua

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

We had some great adventures in Chang Hua (about a 30min. train ride from home). I felt very touristy all day, you will see why as you scroll down ;)

As I uploaded all these pics, I . . . fortuitously . . . split the "Big Buddha" section of our day up into 3 nonconsecutive sections.

This is a picture taken out of the back of "The Big Buddha" (as we Americans so articulately call this particular statue of Buddha). It wasn't very sunny that day, but it got up to 35c (94f).

The Buddha is on top of a hill and this is part of the view. (I really had no concept of posing at the time . . . )

More of the view from the top of the hill. Taiwan is such a densely pact place you literally can't see gaps anywhere in the view. If you look closely to the left of the picture you can see a red cross on top of a building, so in this post I have pictures of symbols from 3 of the top world religions!
From me clockwise: Katy Libby, Erin, Kristi

This is a fun little story. As we were riding the train to Chang Hua, a couple sat across from us. They were memorable because they more 'actively' stared at us than most Taiwanese. Well, we got off the train (being an hour and 10 min. late the people we were supposed to meet were not there) and slowly deciphered a hand drawn map guiding us to "The Big Buddha." About half way there Meg saw a store were she could buy another memory card for her camera. At that corner we ran into that same couple. I don't know exactly how it all worked out (I was pricing out cameras that I can't afford) but we ended up following them across the street to the Chang Hua community center, and up three flights of stairs into an art gallery. The Man introduced us to his art teacher, and then we connected it all. The Man had shown us his card and on it he was holding a paintbrush in his mouth (The Man doesn't have any arms). On exhibit was The Teacher's works. We looked around at all the beautiful oil paintings, one of my favorites (Sunflowers) is behind The Teacher's head. It was a great little encounter!

I'm fairly sure this is a statue of Confucius, and the first time in the day where I felt very touristy in my attempt to imitate the statue.

This is a picture of the pathway to see "The Big Buddha." You can drive there, but this way was actually faster for us pedestrians.

These next two pictures are an alternate path that we took walking down from "The Big Buddha"

On the way to "The Big Buddha" we came across a Confucian Temple. It's a lot bigger than you see in the picture. There are long, skinny, 'schools' on either side and a 'gateway' in front (behind the photographer).
Again, me acting like the silly, American tourist I am.

And again.

And, sadly, again. (Yin & Yang it's not, but touristy it is)

And again.

And again, although this is really cool, 'cause this is inside one of those 'schools.'
Yes, I have been inside one of the Confucian Schools of Thought!

Now this is "The Big Buddha" (yes, that's a window in his thigh).

More touristy moments, but the "Big Buddha" area is very touristy, so I felt it was expected.

And yet another one, but I do think this was the best imitation, not perfect, but close.

After our big touristy day we went to the train station to meet Whitney and Laura to go to Costco and then a singles dance . . . our paths never crossed. . . .
We were at the train station for almost 3 hours (we were an hour early and had to wait 40 min. for the train)
From Left to Right: an annoyed Kristi, a very sad Libby, and a board Katy.

Luckily Meg started a "Guess what I'm thinking of" game which really helped pass the time and got us laughing way too loudly . . . yet another typical American moment to add to our day ;)

Taipei!!!!

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

As the English branch we went to the Taipei LDS Temple, and then to Taipei 101 (the building in the pic below) which is the second tallest building in the world.

I don't know why the pic is so cloudy, it was very clear that day.

We Feng Yuan at 10:30am (they waited for me to finish teaching :) and got there around 1pm.

The Taipei Temple is quite small, but very beautiful!

I don't know why I have the same expression in both of these pics, but they were taken quickly as we were late getting out.

Sadly we didn't allow for time to go to the top, but we have plenty of time to go back. Instead we came up with inventive ways to get the entire building in one frame.

This pic is taken laying on ones back (in a skirt ;) while doing a slight crunch across the street from Taipei 101.
This pic is taken while literally craning ones neck under the ear of the model, standing under Taipei 101

This is just a cool pic! We had just finished the inventive photography (believe me the others came up with some quirky stuff) and all of a sudden the lights came on (it was about 1/4 to 7). So more creative photography ensued. (with or with out flash . . . with!)
All in all it was a very good day!!!!! Plus, there was a Cold Stone inside the Taipei 101 Mall! Oh, how I missed real ice cream!!!

I can't believe I forgot: while we were waiting for our bus some mainland Chinese people came up to us and tried to talk to us in Chinese thinking we would understand. Then, all of a sudden, they asked if they could take a picture with me and AnnaLisa. That's when 3 more groups of people took advantage of the opportunity and asked me AnnaLisa to be in their pictures. It was a very odd moment, but kinda fun! I now know a little bit of what it would be like to be a celebrity ;)

KTV (Karaoke Television)

Karaoke in Taiwan was everything I expected and more!!!!! It was soooooooo much fun!!!!!!

From left to right: Geena, Katy, Grady, Allison, Kevin, Mike, (3 of Kevin's friends)

We started around 9pm and ended around 12am! At around 11:45 the workers came in and asked for our ID's, Allison didn't have hers with her, so all of a sudden everyone was leaving saying we have to go upstairs. I was really confused, apparently the cops might come to make sure everyone is a legal adult due to the 12am curfew. Luckily the room they moved us to was way better!

P.S. Apparently, Asian men love to sing love ballads! And those boys can belt! It was crazy!

Thank you camera women!!!

Aren't we fabulously adorable after our first time going to church in Taiwan!

Uchtdorf, Cooking and McDonald's?

On Sunday we went to a fireside by Pres. Uchtdorf (and yes I spelled that without having too look it up, although I did double check ;).

It was really fabulous!! His wife also gave a talk, and she is just as dynamic as her husband! What a great couple!

There were over 6,000 people there! That is an exponential growth from previous general authority visits! The Spirit was so strong, it got a little overwhelming.

We finally went to McDonald's . . . . Everything tasted exactly the same, except the reason we went there: the ice-cream :(

This is the view from McDonald's. That's the movie theater we saw Eclipse in, and that is the most cars in one place that I've seen since I got to Taiwan!

This is one of our little friends who appears at our kitchen window every night ;)

Cute, ne?

Yes, I can cook!!!! That stir-fry lasted me 3 dinners ;) (now what am I supposed to have Friday?)

I still think it was too much effort.

The only canned 'veggie' they seem to have is canned corn :( But check out the size of those carrots!!! (and the mini asparagus!)

1st Week of Teaching (5-10 July 2010)

Here are some scenic pics since we've been to busy this week to do anything.

A 'Buddha' in a park. It's actually up a on a pedestal of a full flight of stairs!

This was the view from our roof of one of many beautiful sunsets!

This is an Elementary school! Get this: "No playing on the grass!" Sad day.

A scene-scape in the middle of a park in the middle of the city.

The first week of teaching was, as expected rough, but I can see the light of happy times in my future!

Slow

Saturday, July 3rd 2010

Last night we saw Eclipse!!! (just thought I'd share)

This whole week has been prepping for next week really slowly! And today was cram day (not nearly as stressful as I've had in the past, and it seems like because others are stressing I'm staying clam to balance. this might come back to bite me ;)

This is me rewarding myself for finishing.
Note: the 'pudding' is the same type from "My Boss, My Hero" for all you fellow drama lovers ;)
Yes, that is how I look after studying all day.

You will also notice the balled up mosquito net above my head. I have yet to use it.

I feel about 80% confidant for Monday!

Wish me luck!!!!!

Thurs. July 1st 2010

This is me on my bike sporting a new shirt and shoes (notice they're flats).

From right to left are 6 of the other teachers (the head teacher is on holiday till Mon.).

1st pic: Devin, Meg, Erin, Kristi.
2nd pic: Libby, Me, Laura.

Living in Taiwan is really fun right now! The humidity's not horrid and getting stared at all the time is still making me laugh. Plus, I herd one of my favorite Korean rap songs on the radio at a boba shop!!!

We don't teach till Monday, but we got our class rosters today so we're starting to get excited!!!
